Pope Leon XIV called on Tuesday evening for a one-day truce in all parts of the world for Christmas, without mentioning a specific conflict, at the same time expressing regret because "it seems Russia has refused the truce request".
As he left his residence in Castel Gandolfo near Rome returning to the Vatican, the Pope said, "I renew this appeal to all people of good will, to at least respect, on the birthday of the Savior, one day of peace".
He added, "Perhaps they will listen to us, and we may witness twenty-four hours of peace throughout the world," noting that "what particularly saddens me is that it seems as though Russia has refused the truce request".
Pope Leon XIV is scheduled to celebrate his first Christmas mass on Wednesday evening since being elected Pope.
