Belgium joins South Africas lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice

The International Court of Justice announced on Tuesday the accession of Belgium to the lawsuit filed by South Africa accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

Several countries including Brazil, Ireland, Bolivia, Colombia, Libya, Spain, and Mexico have previously joined the lawsuit at the highest court of the United Nations.

In a decision issued in January 2024, four months after the start of the Israeli war on Gaza, the International Court of Justice called on Israel to refrain from committing any acts classified as genocide, warning of a "real and imminent risk" of causing "irreparable harm" to the Palestinians.

The International Court of Justice issued provisional orders requiring Israel to allow access to humanitarian aid and to prevent incitement to genocide and punish its perpetrators. Israel has abstained from implementing these orders.
