Minister of Justice Combating human trafficking is essential for protecting human rights

The Minister of Justice/Chairman of the National Committee for the Prevention of Human Trafficking, Bassam Talhouni, said on Tuesday that human trafficking is a crime condemned by all divine religions, and that combating human trafficking is necessary to protect human rights and uphold human dignity, establishing the principle of accountability and enhancing the rule of law.

Talhouni added during his chairmanship of the meeting of the National Committee for the Prevention of Human Trafficking, held at the Ministry headquarters, that the Jordanian government pays special attention to this file in terms of monitoring and implementation. The law on the prevention of human trafficking number (9) of the year (2009) and its amendments have undergone many changes aimed at keeping up with developments in this area and aligning with international standards and conventions.

A system for the Human Trafficking Victims’ Assistance Fund number (6) for the year (2023) has been issued, which provides necessary assistance to the victims of human trafficking including accommodation in shelters designated for trafficking victims and their safe voluntary return, stemming from a commitment to the national responsibility of the member entities of the National Committee for the Prevention of Human Trafficking and partner entities.

Talhouni highlighted that the national strategy for the prevention of human trafficking for the years (2024- 2027) emphasized the importance of national efforts to combat this crime, affirming the role of the National Committee for the Prevention of Human Trafficking in achieving the goals of the national strategy for the prevention of human trafficking and that enhancing coordination between partner entities ensures an integrated approach and avoids duplication of efforts.

He pointed out that the National Committee for the Prevention of Human Trafficking is particularly important as it forms a comprehensive national framework for dealing with one of the most dangerous organized crimes, commending the efforts of the National Committee for the Prevention of Human Trafficking in terms of monitoring the implementation of the national strategy and action plans approved and measuring their impact on the ground.

The committee reviewed during the meeting the most important observations and recommendations contained in a number of international reports on combating human trafficking in Jordan and the most important recommendations for the next phase to provide mechanisms to combat this crime.

It is noted that the National Committee for the Prevention of Human Trafficking is chaired by the Minister of Justice and includes in its membership the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Justice for Judicial Affairs as the Vice-Chairman, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Interior, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Labor, the Commissioner-General of the National Center for Human Rights, the Secretary-General of the National Council for Family Affairs, one of the senior officers of the Public Security, and representatives from the ministries (Foreign Affairs, Social Development, Industry and Trade, Health).
