Electronic Error Turns Traffic Violation into the Largest Fine in History

Khaberni -  A Turkish lawyer experienced an unexpected shock after discovering that his name was associated with an enormous financial penalty on the tax system, a figure that exceeded all expectations and was greater than any traffic fine recorded in modern history in Turkey.

The story began when the lawyer Emre Gulhaci, residing in the Kozan district of Adana province, attempted to check his usual tax status, only to be startled to find that an amount of 2 billion 650 million 843 thousand 607 Turkish Lira was listed as a traffic fine against him, which is equivalent to about 63.5 million dollars.

The lawyer clarified that after reviewing overdue debts, he discovered that the actual fine was only 1042 Turkish Lira, and that the immense figure was merely a technical error in entering the fine.

Gulhaci pointed out that after contacting the officials, it was confirmed that the matter was a momentary error in the system, and that the real amount of the fine was much less, and the matter was immediately reviewed to correct the figure.

The lawyer concluded his statement saying: "I was shocked by the astronomical number, and I had to try to calm myself.. Just seeing this number associated with a traffic fine made me realize the magnitude of the mistake, as in my five years of professional experience, I have never heard of anyone facing such a fine.. This amount could buy thousands of cars or hundreds of apartments, and it is an unprecedented number at all.”
