Your Text Messages May Reveal Your Dark Personality Traits

Experts have found that the way you write text messages can reveal a lot about an individual's personality.

Through the words you choose daily, it is possible to identify positive or negative personality traits in you, including signs of personality disorders.

Charlotte Entwistle, a psychologist at the University of Liverpool, explains that analyzing daily language - whether in text messages, emails, casual conversations, or online comments - reveals deep patterns in thinking, emotions, and social relationships.

She said: "If someone uses a lot of profanity or expresses hatred of things consistently, this may be an indicator of negative personality traits."

She added: "Owners of these traits often use aggressive, negative, and isolating language, while lacking words associated with social interaction like 'we'."

Psychologists refer to these traits as the "Dark Tetrad," which includes:

Machiavellianism: Manipulating and exploiting others, focusing on self-interest and deception.

Narcissism: Grandiosity, pride, selfishness, and lack of empathy.

Psychopathy: Antisocial behavior, impulsiveness, selfishness, cruelty, and lack of remorse.

Sadism: The tendency to inflict pain, suffering, or humiliation on others for pleasure or control.

Previous studies have suggested that these traits are associated with behaviors like animal hatred, humiliation of others, and singleness. Additionally, analysis of text messages can reveal these traits, such as manipulation, cruelty, or mood swings, and negative behaviors.

Entwistle said: "These patterns often appear in people's speech or writing before they become clear in their actions." She added: "Noticing these patterns helps us understand others, support those facing difficulties, and manage our social life safely and consciously, whether online or in reality."

She explained: "In everyday situations - dating, making friends, and online interactions - recognizing patterns of aggression, negativity, and emotional and cognitive rigidity can reveal early signs of a dark personality, such as antisocial personality disorder or narcissism."

She concluded saying: "Excessive use of self-references and words of anger, along with the absence of social communication terms, can be an important linguistic clue that should be noted."
