The Difference Between Green and Black Tea and Their Effects on the Stomach

Khaberni - Dr. Yekaterina Kashuk, a specialist in internal medicine, stated that both green and black tea are made from the same plant, and that the difference between them lies not in the type but in the tea concentration and quantity.

The doctor explains that green and black tea are extracted from the same plant, differing only in the degree of fermentation. She said, "Green tea contains a higher level of antioxidants, specifically catechins, known for their anti-inflammatory properties and for enhancing metabolic processes. Black tea, on the other hand, is richer in other compounds such as theaflavins produced during the fermentation process, which also possess antioxidant properties and are generally gentler on the stomach."

She added that the health benefits of tea depend not only on its type but also on its concentration, temperature, and quantity within the diet.

She warned that highly concentrated tea, regardless of its type, may irritate the stomach, especially if consumed on an empty stomach, due to its high tannin content, which can cause heartburn and inhibit iron absorption. Green tea is often more impactful on a sensitive stomach in this case.

She pointed out that the most important factor is to choose the type of tea that the individual prefers and tolerates best, noting that moderation and individual body response are the most crucial factors, rather than just pursuing the purported benefits of green tea alone.
