Superfood with Amazing Health Benefits

Khaberni - The pharmaceutical expert, Deepa Kamdar, sheds light on a common nutritional ingredient that carries a treasure trove of health benefits.

Kamdar, a senior lecturer in pharmacy practice at Kingston University, explains that cranberries contain a unique composition that makes them deserving of the title "superfood" for their protective and therapeutic abilities, ranging from fighting inflammation to enhancing heart health.

Research has proven its effective role in several health areas, notably:

1. Fighting urinary tract infections

Cranberries are famous for their preventive ability to avoid urinary tract infections, especially among women and children who suffer from recurrences. The fruit contains compounds called "proanthocyanidins" which prevent bacteria (such as Escherichia coli) from adhering to the bladder wall, which is the first step for infection.

A study indicates that cranberry juice and pills reduce infection rates and decrease the need for antibiotics, with pills proving more effective and cost-efficient.

2. Enhancing cardiovascular health

Cranberries are rich in powerful antioxidants such as "anthocyanins" and "quercetin," which protect cells from damage. Research shows that regular consumption can:

Raise levels of HDL (good) cholesterol.

Lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, especially in diabetic patients.

Improve the elasticity of blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

Reduce levels of "homocysteine," an amino acid linked to inflammation.

3. Potential protective role against cancer

Research studies the role of cranberries in slowing the growth of cancer cells, owing to their content of compounds such as "ursolic acid" with anti-inflammatory effects.

A clinical trial showed that drinking two cups of cranberry juice daily could reduce the risk of stomach cancer by preventing the adhesion of Helicobacter pylori bacteria to the stomach.

How to consume it and what are the precautions?

Kamdar advises consuming fresh cranberries to get the maximum benefit, as they provide fiber and full nutrients that supplements lack.

However, the following groups should be cautious:

Those most susceptible to kidney stones: due to their content of "oxalates."

Heart patients taking "warfarin": as the juice might interact with the medication and increase the risk of bleeding. (Excessive juicing or supplements may cause digestive disorders, and sweetened juices lose much of their health value.)
