Scientists have been focusing for decades in their studies on the inner content of the egg for its nutritional value, yet the scientific paradox lies in that the greater benefit may be hidden in the inner membrane of the eggshell.
In an unexpected scientific turn, a recent study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reveals a true nutritional treasure in that transparent membrane separating the shell and the egg white.
The study, which involved participants aged between 35 and 65 years, found that consuming 450 mg daily of hydrolyzed eggshell membrane supplement for three months led to noticeable improvements in skin and hair quality. Researchers observed a clear reduction in crow's feet wrinkles around the eye area within just four weeks, while skin tone and texture improved after eight weeks of regular use.
The positive results extended not only to the skin but also to the hair, as participants recorded an increase in hair density and strength, alongside a significant reduction in breakage and improved growth.
Scientists attribute these dual effects to the unique composition of the eggshell membrane, which contains three essential substances that work in harmony: hyaluronic acid which maintains skin hydration and elasticity, keratin which forms the fundamental structure of hair, skin and nails, and a set of amino acids that act as building blocks for proteins.
As the body ages, it needs additional support as its natural ability to produce these essential elements decreases, leading to signs of aging such as wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and thinning hair, making the results of this study of great importance to many. The benefits of eggshell membranes go beyond aesthetics to include overall health, as prior studies (including a 2009 study) have indicated their ability to alleviate joint pain and improve movement, particularly for those suffering from arthritis, in addition to their potential role in enhancing bone health and reducing the risk of age-related fractures.
This scientific discovery opens new horizons in the field of dietary supplements and natural cosmetics, with the affirmation that some of the best beauty care solutions may come from simple sources available in our kitchens, though they require precise scientific processing to extract their full benefits.
