We smile at Amman when it lets down its hair
We wear the white qaddah and sing for it "Oh father of the white qaddah"
Who remembers the hearty laughter of our grandmothers, which came from their hearts with spontaneity?
Who recalls the nicknames that the elders would joke with in every Jordanian village?
Yes, we are a people who smile with dignity, smiling at a child's laugh, a rose, a cock's crow, and a new dawn,
We smile at the falling snow and rain, at flowers and spring,
We smile when the peach tree bears its first fruit,
We smile at hot bread which some do not laugh about,
We smile at the seasons and the joy of seasons, for seeding, planting, and harvest,
We smile at the scent of threshed freekeh and freshly cooked dishes, at the first fruit berries, at the dew, at vineyards and grapevines, at the almond blossoms in March,
We smile when it rains and sing "May the rain come, O Lord, to water our western crops",
We smile at the feast and at holiday cookies, at the emergence of white butter from the churn, at the scent of hanthab used in pure ghee,
We smile when drinking the milk from mansaf or mulukhiyah at weddings
Our smiles may not be seen, but they are ingrained in hearts and souls,
Our foreheads are like unbreakable rock, but even stone, when invaded by winter and spring, gives birth to anemones and smiles
