Khaberni - Jordanian artist Saffa Sultan disclosed details of her sudden affliction with a strange disease before a live appearance on a program, several months ago, which clearly affected her facial features.
In a media interview, Saffa Sultan said that she was surprised before appearing live on the show "With Rabia" by noticeable swelling in her face, yet what stunned her was maintaining her normal body measurements without any difference.
Latterly, Saffa Sultan realized that she had contracted a condition known as "moon face," which caused this notable change, but at that time, she chose to commit to her live appearance out of respect for her audience.
"Moon face" or Cushing’s face, which is the common name for Cushing's Syndrome, results from a persistent increase in cortisol in the body, medically known as hypercortisolemia.
This hormone accumulation leads to facial puffiness making the face appear round, and sometimes fat accumulation at the upper back and below the neck, known as a Cushingoid hump.
"Moon face" is accompanied by other symptoms including high blood pressure, increased blood sugar levels, skin thinning, muscle weakness, depression, red or purple skin striae, excessive hair growth or baldness, and severe complications may arise if the condition is left untreated, including osteoporosis and slow wound healing.
It is worth mentioning that Saffa Sultan had previously revealed her diagnosis with Mediterranean fever, a hereditary disease causing recurrent inflammation in the abdomen, chest, and joints, associated with the MEFV gene responsible for regulating the immune system.
The artist clarified in previous statements that this disease usually appears in form of short flare-ups ranging from one to three days, which may be accompanied by symptoms such as fever, joint pain, muscle swelling, leg rash, and occasionally complications extending to the kidneys, heart, and lungs if left without therapeutic monitoring.
