Khaberni - Dr. Dinara Sadikova, an ophthalmologist, explained that feeling like there is sand in the eye, itching, a runny nose, and heavy discharges from the eye could be signs of conjunctivitis.
Dr. Sadikova said that although the signs of conjunctivitis are similar, each type has its distinctive symptoms. Common symptoms include: redness of the eye, feeling of sand, burning or stinging, tears, and swollen eyelids. The doctor relies on these features to accurately determine the cause and prescribe the appropriate treatment.
For example, viral conjunctivitis is characterized by clear mucous discharges, usually starting in one eye then quickly spreading to the other, and may be accompanied by a sore throat, runny nose, and fever.
On the other hand, bacterial conjunctivitis is characterized by yellow or green purulent discharges, especially noticeable upon waking up, and patients often feel like there is a foreign body under the eyelid.
As for allergic conjunctivitis, the main symptom is unbearable severe itching, with noticeable swelling in the conjunctiva and heavy tear secretion, usually affecting both eyes at the same time, often accompanied by sneezing and nasal congestion.
