Saudi Arabia Heavy rains hit Riyadh and red warnings of floods

Khaberni - The Saudi capital Riyadh witnessed on Monday rainfall that ranged from moderate to heavy, coinciding with the rainy condition affecting several areas of the kingdom, which is expected to continue until next Thursday, according to the National Center for Meteorology.

The National Center for Meteorology issued a red alert concerning heavy rains in areas in Riyadh, including Dawadmi, Al-Rayn, and Al-Quwai'iyah, while it mentioned moderate rainfall in Afif governorate, calling for caution and warning of the dangers of floodwaters and water accumulations.

In its report on today’s weather on Monday, the National Center for Meteorology predicted thunderstorms ranging from moderate to heavy that might lead to flooding, accompanied by hail showers and strong winds stirring dust and sand, affecting parts of Jazan, Asir, Al Baha, Mecca, Riyadh, Qassim, Hail, and the Eastern Region.

It also noted that the rains would be light to moderate in parts of the regions of Medina, Tabuk, Al-Jouf, the Northern Border, as well as parts of the Najran region, with chances of fog formation in some of the affected areas.

The report clarified that the surface wind movement on the Red Sea would be northwesterly to northerly on the northern and central part, and southwesterly to northwesterly on the southern part, with speeds ranging from 15 to 40 kilometers per hour, which may exceed 60 kilometers per hour during the formation of rainy thunderclouds on the southern part.

Wave height ranges from half a meter to a meter and a half, and may increase to more than two and a half meters with rainy thunderclouds, while the sea condition ranges from light to moderate, and may become rough in the southern part.

On the Arabian Gulf, the surface wind movement will be northeasterly to easterly with speeds ranging from 12 to 35 kilometers per hour, and may exceed 60 kilometers per hour during the formation of rainy thunderclouds. Wave height ranges from half a meter to a meter and a half, and may reach over two and a half meters with rainy thunderclouds, while the sea condition ranges from light to moderate, and may become rough at times.

In a related context, educational administrations in various regions of the kingdom announced the suspension of schooling today on Monday due to weather conditions, including the educational administrations of Riyadh, Al Baha, the Eastern Region, and Jazan, prioritizing the safety of students and educational staff.
