Greater Amman Municipality Approves Strategic Agreements for Smart Cities

Khaberni - The Greater Amman Municipality Committee held its eighth regular session on Thursday, chaired by Yusuf Al-Shawarbah, the head of the committee.

Shawarbah extended his congratulations to His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein and his Crown Prince on the occasion of the New Year, wishing it to be a year of goodness and peace for the Arab and Islamic nations. He also congratulated the Christian denominations on the occasion of the glorious Christmas.

During the session chaired by Yusuf Al-Shawarbah, the Greater Amman Municipality Committee ratified a draft agreement for the project to develop a strategy for the Arab Forum for Smart Cities 2030 with the Arab Urban Development Institute, aimed at defining the forum's vision, mission, and institutional scope of work, as well as identifying strategic priorities and key themes for the period 2026-2030.

The committee also approved a draft memorandum of understanding with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority which aims to establish a general framework for cooperation, exchange of expertise, experts, knowledge, and data between the Amman Municipality and the Authority in areas of mutual interest, contributing to the enhancement of institutional performance, city service development, quality of life improvements, advancement in urban planning and organization, development of building licensing procedures, service uplift in engineering and public works, infrastructure preservation, and the expansion of green spaces in the city, urban waste management, and support for the transformation into smart and sustainable cities.

The committee ratified a draft agreement for the provision of a grant for the European Rapid Electric Transit Buses (EBRT2030) project with the International Association of Public Transport, to conduct a feasibility study on future fast electric bus transport systems, aimed at enhancing sustainable urban transport through the application of the next generation of rapid bus systems supported by modern automation and smart connectivity technologies, thereby helping reduce emissions, pollutants, and traffic congestion.

The committee approved allocating funds within the Amman Municipality's budget for the Amman Vision Company for treatment and recycling, for a period of ten years, for contracting purposes with service providers, three in total, enabling Amman Vision Company to provide the best environmental services through service providers and ensuring the continuity of the required work.

The committee also endorsed the appointment of two members of the municipality council, the head of the Jordanian Engineers Association Abdullah Ghosheh, and Cesar Omar Suber, as members of the Central Planning Committee chaired by the head of the Greater Amman Municipality, which oversees matters related to planning and regulation.

The committee also approved a draft grant agreement (technical assistance) with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development worth 75,000 euros to finance consultancy services and technical assistance for the Amman Municipality in procuring and installing a new engine to be connected to the biogas system at the Ghabawi landfill, as part of funding for the construction of the sixth cell at the Ghabawi landfill.

The committee agreed to establish the Steering Committee for the Smart City, which will undertake the tasks of approving the strategic plan for transforming into a smart city, adopting proposed project packages within the strategy, approving policies, methodologies, priorities, specifications, frameworks, and procedures for Amman Municipality's projects for transforming into a smart city, in addition to ensuring that the smart projects reflect the cultural and historical character of the city.
