Essential Tips to Avoid Common Medication Risks

Health experts warn that the misuse of some common medications during winter, including pain relievers such as acetaminophen, can lead to serious and unexpected effects.

The British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) explained that even simple products, such as cough syrup and cold or allergy medications, can cause problems when used incorrectly, especially when mixed with alcohol.

Here are five essential tips to avoid the risks of common medications:

Avoid mixing medications with alcohol: Alcohol can interact with many over-the-counter medications, increasing drowsiness and dizziness, and slowing reactions, which raises the risk of falls and accidents. Therefore, always read the package insert or consult the pharmacist.

Beware of overdosing on acetaminophen: Since many cold and flu medications contain it, combining them with other pain relievers that include the same substance can lead to an unintended overdose.

Do not take expired medications: Old or leftover medications should be disposed of safely after consulting a pharmacist.

Adhere to reading the package insert: Even for familiar medications, as their instructions may change, including warnings about interactions with alcohol.

Do not share prescribed medications: A treatment suitable for one person may be harmful to another, even within a family.
