Khaberni - The Israeli newspaper "Maariv" said that dozens of soldiers in the "Shomron" brigade began receiving treatment against rabies after they adopted and treated "young dogs" in recent days, before it was discovered at the end of the week that the dogs were infected with rabies and died from it.
According to "Maariv", since rabies is a deadly disease that attacks the central nervous system and is unsurvivable, the Ministry of Health identified 27 people who had been in contact with the dogs, and the Israeli military said that it had already started treating 20 soldiers who had direct contact with the dogs.
Statement and investigation by the Israeli Army
According to the Israeli Army's statement: "Last weekend, about 20 soldiers at the Shomron brigade headquarters were directed to health offices and hospitals due to their contact with a dog infected with rabies. All soldiers who had contact with the dog were examined and vaccinated as needed, and it is expected that an additional number of soldiers will reach health offices for further consultation today. According to the directives, every soldier dealing with an animal at the brigade headquarters is sent for examination, and there will be awareness raising in the unit along with a full investigation."
The military investigation into the incident reveals that a "puppy" brought to the base by a female soldier from a nearby field was cared for by the soldiers for several days until it was found dead.
