Khaberni - A Turkish couple became entangled in an unexpected legal dispute after they performed a famous song at their wedding, a video of which spread widely on social media and garnered millions of views and likes over two years.
The incident dates back to June 2023 when the young man, Hasan Başkaya, and his bride appeared in a circulating video singing "Ne Bilsin Eller" by artist Joşkun Deric during their wedding.
The video initially spread through accounts dedicated to wedding content, where it did not exceed 1500 likes on the original groom’s account, but it reached millions of views on other pages.
Two years later, as the video's dissemination increased, the couple were surprised by an official complaint filed by the artist Joşkun Deric against them, demanding 300,000 Turkish Lira for a settlement, claiming unauthorized use of the song.
The husband, who is a music teacher, mentioned that they did not make any financial gain from the video and noted that the artist had initially responded to the video with a clapping emoji to express admiration, and even replied to the husband’s apology about the unauthorized use, before deleting his comment later and the couple was recently informed that an investigation would be opened against them.
He added, "We were shocked by the amount of compensation requested.. I have never seen such an amount in my life.. All we did was perform a song on our wedding night."
The husband indicated that the case highlights legal gaps relating to music rights in Turkey, saying, "Even posting a short clip or a Story without financial gain can subject someone to accountability.. This is a matter that concerns all amateurs and musicians."
Despite the developments, Başkaya clarified that they still appreciate the artist, but he refuses to communicate with them, making a plea to overcome the dispute by saying, "My wife and I love his songs.. We offered to sing them with him and film a joint music video if he wants.. We just hope he withdraws the lawsuit."
