A new study found that those who take slimming injections such as Ozempic Wegovy and Mounjaro are more likely to suffer from chronic cough, with an increase up to 29% even if they have not been diagnosed with acid reflux.
Researchers concluded that slimming drugs from the "glucagon-like peptide receptors GLP-1" commonly used for weight loss and diabetes treatment may increase the risk of chronic cough.
Definition of Chronic Cough
According to "Health Day", chronic cough is defined as a cough that persists for 8 weeks or more in adults.
To reach this conclusion, the research team from the University of Southern California and Mayo Clinic reviewed electronic medical records from 70 health care institutions across the United States, covering over two million patients.
They identified adults with type 2 diabetes who were prescribed these drugs, and compared them with those prescribed other common second-line diabetes medications.
Results
The results showed that people who were prescribed GLP-1 drugs were more likely to suffer from chronic cough, with rates ranging from 12% to 29%.
This association was found even among those who were not diagnosed with acid reflux, a common side effect of slimming drugs that may cause a dry cough.
Researchers said that further research is needed to confirm the findings and to determine the cause of this association.
