Khaberni - Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced, following a meeting of the foreign ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries in Brussels, the disbandment of the "Russia – NATO" Council.
After the meeting, Sikorski told reporters, "Among the official decisions, the NATO Secretary General announced the cancellation of the Russia-NATO Council. This was what the Polish government had been working towards, and it has now become a reality."
During this, the Polish minister affirmed that what is called "European security" is being shaped "against Russia."
While talking about the dissolution of the "Russia - NATO" Council, the Polish minister added: "This institution (the Council) was formed at a time when it seemed possible to build European security in cooperation with Russia. That time has long passed. Today, we are building European security based on confrontation with Russia. This has also been reflected in institutional forms."
The "Russia-NATO" Council was a consultation mechanism between Russia and the countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, formed on May 28, 2002, in Rome. It operated under a "29+1" format, allowing equal participation and discussion on security issues, arms reduction, anti-terrorism efforts, and incident prevention measures.
After 2014, NATO suspended its practical cooperation with Russia and limited it to political dialogue. The meetings were held irregularly. In recent years, the council had effectively ceased to operate.
