Khaberni - Astronomy enthusiasts around the world are eagerly anticipating the appearance of the last supermoon in 2025 today (Thursday).
The Cold Moon
This moon is the last full moon of the year, known as the Cold Moon (Cold Moon), due to its association with the start of the long, cold nights of winter. It is expected to appear brighter and larger, especially at the moments of its initial rise above the horizon, due to the "moon illusion" phenomenon that makes it appear larger in size.
The Cold Moon is the highest full moon in the sky of the northern hemisphere during 2025. It also represents the twelfth and last full moon of the year. Experts indicate that the solar year is about 365.24 days compared to 354.37 days in the lunar year, which sometimes leads to the appearance of 13 full moons in one year as last occurred in 2023 and will recur in 2028.
The naming of the Cold Moon is linked to American folkloric traditions dating back to the Native Americans, who used to link moon names to seasons and the natural changes that characterize each month.
The Supermoon
The term "supermoon" is used to describe the full moon that is closest to the Earth at the nearest point in its orbit, which gives it a larger apparent size and a brighter glow compared to the usual full moons, making it appear about 14% larger compared to its size at the furthest point from Earth, and increases the lunar gravitational effects on sea tides, although the differences are not significant.
