Khaberni - The Jordanian Seismic Observatory recorded 1227 earthquakes from the start of 2025 until the end of November, according to the director of the observatory, Ghassan Sweidan.

Sweidan explained that these shakes were distributed between local, regional, and distant earthquakes, with the observatory detecting 102 local shakes, 562 regional shakings, and 563 distant quakes.

He pointed out that the local earthquakes included several areas in Jordan, with 19 quakes detected in the Dead Sea area, 10 in Aqaba and the Red Sea, and 13 in the Wadi Araba area, and 21 in the Jordan Valley and Tiberias. Additionally, 3 shakes were detected in the areas of Ruwaished and Al-Sarhan, and 36 quakes in neighboring areas, noting the highest was an earthquake in the Gulf of Aqaba, 60 km from the Jordanian shores, ranging in strength from 1 to 4.2 on the Richter scale.

He mentioned that the local quakes covered several areas in Jordan, detecting 19 earthquakes in the Dead Sea area, 10 in Aqaba and the Red Sea, and 13 in the Wadi Araba area, and 21 in the Jordan Valley and Tiberias. Also, 3 tremors were detected in Ruwaished and Al-Sarhan areas, and 36 quakes in the neighboring regions, stating that the highest was an earthquake in the Gulf of Aqaba, 60 km from the Jordanian shores, ranging in strength from 1 to 4.2 on the Richter scale.

Sweidan added that the 562 regional quakes ranged in strength from 3 to 6.2 on the Richter scale, and were mostly concentrated in the Mediterranean Sea area. Meanwhile, the distant quakes ranged in strength from 4.2 to 7.5 on the Richter scale, pointing out that the majority of these shakes occurred in Eastern Russia.

Regarding unusual seismic activity, Sweidan confirmed that no unusual seismic activity was observed in Jordan during this period, considering the recorded activity to be within the normal range in terms of the number of earthquakes and their magnitudes.

Sweidan explained that the local seismic activity this year, compared to the seismic activity in 2024, was less in terms of the number of recorded shakes, confirming that the seismic activity in Jordan generally is not considered unusual.
