Khaberni - Dutch prosecutors stated that a teenage girl was allegedly restrained and thrown into a swamp to drown in an honor crime perpetrated by her father and her brothers.
The devout father became enraged after the girl, named Ryan Najjar, refused to wear a hijab and to stop using social media.
Ryan Najjar's body, an 18-year-old, was found gagged, with her hands tied behind her back, her ankles tied together, and thrown in a swamp six days after she disappeared from the family home in Gouda in May last year.
Against the backdrop of her death, her brothers, Mohammad, 23, and Muhannad Najjar, 25, are being tried for her murder, while their father Khaled, accused of ordering the killing, fled to Syria.
On Friday, Dutch prosecutors demanded that the father and his sons be jailed for up to 25 years for drowning the girl, believing her "western" behavior brought shame to the family.
According to local media, officials arrested Ryan's brothers and charged them in connection with her killing.
The public prosecutor said on Friday: "They saw Ryan as a burden that needed to be removed, simply because she was a young woman who wanted to live her own life."
The prosecution confirmed that Ryan's brothers abducted her from the family home in Rotterdam before taking her to a remote location where her father Khaled, 53 years old, met with her.
Evidence showed the presence of the father's DNA under his daughter's nails, indicating his direct involvement in the crime.
The father fled to Syria immediately after the incident, complicating his extradition to justice, and was considered by the public prosecutor as a coward who left his sons to bear the responsibility and destroyed his entire family.
The brothers face a 20-year prison sentence each for murder, while the father might be sentenced to 25 years in prison if tried in absentia.
Dutch media reported that the father sent emails admitting to the murder, while chat conversations indicated the brothers' involvement in executing the crime.
