Khaberni - The Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee, headed by MP Ahmad Al-Shudayfat, discussed during a meeting held on Tuesday, the major challenges faced by poultry and livestock breeders in Jordan.

Al-Shudayfat confirmed, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture Saeb Khriesat, Secretary-General of the Ministry Mohammad Hayari, and a number of breeders, that joint effort and the unification of efforts among relevant parties are the way to achieve tangible results on the ground, which will positively reflect on farmers, consumers, and the national economy.

Khriesat clarified that the ministry has stopped importing frozen poultry, and is working on regulating import operations to align with Jordanian specifications and standards, without affecting the local product.

He added that the unregulated spread of poultry farms in the kingdom has contributed to market fluctuations, noting that the recent drop in chicken prices is due to the abundance of production and increased quantities available.

In turn, poultry and livestock breeders emphasized that the agricultural sector needs a serious stand and a clear strategy to support livestock breeders, pointing out that climate changes, scarce rainfall, and the resulting decline in natural pastures have increased their dependence on high-cost imported feed.

The breeders stressed the need to adopt comprehensive solutions, the most prominent of which are increasing the quantities of designated feed, postponing due payments on their loans, and exempting them from the accruing interest, in support of the sustainability of this vital sector.
