Egypt Trains Palestinian Police Force to Participate in Security Maintenance in Gaza

Khaberni - Members of the Palestinian police from Gaza are receiving training in Egypt, to participate in a force expected to take over security operations in the sector after the end of the war, according to a Palestinian official.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty announced in August during a visit to the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing leading to the sector, alongside his Palestinian counterpart Mohammad Mustafa, that Egypt is working on a plan to train five thousand officers and security personnel in Cairo to prepare for their deployment in Gaza after the war.

A Palestinian official, who asked not to be named, said that more than 500 elements and officers of the police received operational and theoretical training in Cairo in March, and that hundreds more have been continuing similar training since the end of September.

A 26-year-old Palestinian officer who participated in the course, refusing to reveal his name, said, "I am very happy with this training," adding "We want to stop the war and aggression permanently, and we are eager to serve the nation and the citizen."

He expressed his hope to form an independent security force "not beholden to foreign alliances and goals. We want it loyal to Palestine only."

The Palestinian official explained that the recently trained members will be part of a force consisting of five thousand policemen, all from Gaza but receiving their salaries from the Palestinian Authority based in Ramallah.

According to an agreement sponsored by Egypt, concluded at the end of 2024 between Hamas and Fatah led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the five thousand policemen affiliated with the Authority will be merged with five thousand of their counterparts in the Hamas-led police in Gaza.

The police force will be under the supervision and responsibility of the "Independent Competencies" (technocrat) committee, which Hamas and Fatah agreed to form to manage the Gaza sector, and will be deployed in the sector after the end of the war.

Trump's Plan

The plan of the US President Donald Trump to stop the war in the Gaza strip, which was recently supported by a resolution issued by the Security Council, stipulates that the Gaza strip is to be governed "by a provisional technocratic and non-politicized Palestinian committee" responsible for the daily services of the residents in Gaza, under the supervision of an international transitional authority.

The Palestinian official states that the Egyptian training plan is coordinated with the Palestinian Authority.
