Khaberni - The state news agency in Ethiopia reported on Wednesday that the number of deaths from a Marburg virus outbreak has risen to six.

Ethiopia confirmed the outbreak of the disease for the first time on November 14, before reporting 3 deaths just three days later.

The agency reported on its Facebook page that the Ministry of Health stated, "Out of 11 confirmed cases of the virus, 6 have died and 5 are undergoing medical treatment."

The ministry added that 349 individuals suspected of being in contact with the infected persons were quarantined, and 119 of them have completed the monitoring period and have been released from quarantine.

Marburg virus belongs to the same family as the Ebola virus and usually causes severe headaches and bleeding.

Previous outbreaks in Africa have recorded fatality rates of up to 80% or more, typically within 8 to 9 days from the appearance of symptoms.
