Causes of Skin and Scalp Itching and Ways to Relieve It

Khaberni - Diagnoses of skin and scalp itching vary according to reasons which include skin infection, internal disorders in the body, or taking certain medications.

The itching may result from an allergic reaction to antibiotics and antidepressants.

According to "Daily Mail," one of the most important and common causes of skin and scalp itching is dry skin, which is more prevalent among the elderly and in cold weather.

In addition to eczema and contact dermatitis (when the skin is irritated upon touching something), there are other skin causes such as an infection caused by mites or scabies.

Biliary stasis
The itching might also be a sign of an internal disorder, such as biliary stasis, which is a potentially severe condition where bile accumulates in the liver and bile ducts, instead of flowing to the intestines.

Skin itching might occur long before other related symptoms appear, such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).

The itching might also result from an allergic reaction to antibiotics, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants.

Kidney diseases, iron deficiency, thyroid diseases, and diabetes might also cause this itching.

How do you soothe skin itching?
Calm your skin with lukewarm baths, applying cold compresses, and using moisturizers or anti-itch creams.

Wear loose cotton clothes, use mild, fragrance-free soap and detergents, and avoid scratching to prevent worsening the itching and the possibility of infection.

If the itching is severe, persists for more than two weeks, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever or a rash that does not heal, consult a doctor.
