AlShoubaki Anticipated Increase in Diesel Prices with the Arrival of Winter in Jordan

Khaberni - Energy specialist economist Amer Al-Shoubaki expects the government to raise diesel prices by approximately 2.5 piasters per liter (equivalent to half a dinar per tank), and to raise the price of both types of gasoline by about 5 fils per liter, as part of the pricing for the upcoming December. This coincides with the beginning of the winter quadragenarian and increased demand for heating.

Al-Shoubaki mentioned that the global monthly average of oil prices dropped in November from 65 dollars to 63 dollars per barrel. Despite the decline in Brent crude, the global bottleneck in refining margins, reduced Russian diesel supply, seasonal maintenance of refineries, and increased winter demand in the Northern Hemisphere have all contributed to the global increase in gasoline and diesel prices this month.

Al-Shoubaki explained that this development reflects a seasonal paradox that sometimes occurs, where the price of crude oil drops while the prices of petroleum products rise as a result of differing supply and demand dynamics in the derivatives market.

He indicated that Jordan's Petroleum Derivatives Pricing Committee bases its pricing on the global Platts newsletter for derivatives prices, while Brent crude serves as a general reference and is not the direct determinant of fuel prices in the local market.

The government had made minor reductions to gasoline prices at the beginning of November, reducing the price of 90 octane gasoline by one piaster per liter, and 95 octane gasoline by 5 fils, while keeping diesel and kerosene prices unchanged, with kerosene maintaining its fixed price for two years.

The following are the current prices in the local market:

Gasoline 90: 84.5 piasters/liter

Gasoline 95: 107.5 piasters/liter

Diesel: 68.5 piasters/liter

Kerosene: 62 piasters/liter
