For rice lovers a healthier alternative due to dietary fiber

Khaberni - The Consumer Advice Center in the state of Bavaria, Germany, recommends a healthier alternative to rice; confirming that barley significantly surpasses rice in terms of dietary fiber.

It explained that white rice contains about 1.5 grams per 100 grams, while pearl barley contains three times the amount (4.6 grams), and barley flakes may contain more than 10 grams of fiber per 100 grams.

Regularly consuming plenty of dietary fiber in our diet is beneficial for our bodies for several reasons, including: fibers make us feel full for longer, improve digestion; because it stimulates bowel activity, which helps prevent constipation, and dietary fiber also reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and colon cancer.

Barley also contains a relatively high amount of "beta-glucan," which is soluble fiber that positively affects cholesterol levels, and is also found in oats, for example.

Barley is described as somewhat sweet in taste. Here are some ways to try these grains:

- Pearl barley: dehulled and polished barley grains that can be used like rice. It can also be used to cook risotto, as well as added to soups.

- Barley flakes: Can be added to morning muesli.

- Barley flour: Ground barley can be used to make bread. Mixing barley with wheat flour, for example, is necessary, otherwise, the bread will not rise. The proteins in barley cannot form gluten.
