Khaberni - Meta has historically required Facebook users to post under their real names with some exceptions, but at least for Facebook groups, the company will now offer new options.
Facebook group members will now be able to participate using a custom alias and avatar image, instead of being forced to use their real names or post anonymously.
Meta stated that users can now set a custom alias through the same toggle button that allows them to create a post anonymously in Facebook groups, according to a report from the technology news site "Engadget."
Facebook group administrators must enable the alias feature, and in some cases, it is approved on an individual basis. But once activated, group members can switch between posting under their real names or aliases.
The only restriction for using an alias is that the name must comply with Meta's community standards and current terms of service.
While setting up a new alias, users can also choose from a selection of customized avatar images, which appear to mostly be cute animals wearing sunglasses.
Groups are one of several features on Facebook that Meta has continuously tried to modify over recent years to re-attract users.
In 2024, the company introduced a section highlighting local events shared within Facebook groups. Recently, it added tools for administrators to convert private groups to public in an effort to attract new members.
