Khaberni - Mental illnesses are often undetected in men. What is the reason for that?
To answer this question, the Men's Health Gateway of the Federal Institute of Public Health in Germany stated that the diagnosis of mental illnesses in men is less common compared to women. This is not because men are less affected by mental illnesses than women, but because they visit psychiatrists less frequently.
The health portal explained that dealing with psychological problems is still difficult for many men as they tend to deny suffering from a mental illness.
Addictive Behavior
Men tend to confront mental illness through anger outbursts, increased risk-taking, excessive exercising, and addictive behaviors such as increased consumption of alcohol and nicotine.
The portal emphasized the importance of consulting a psychiatrist upon noticing these behaviors to undergo psychological treatment timely, especially if these behaviors are accompanied by symptoms like despair, loss of self-worth and life value, and thoughts of self-harm such as suicidal thoughts.
Psychological Treatment
These symptoms can be addressed through psychological therapy like cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps patients change their negative view of life and teaches them useful strategies for coping with psychological burdens and stress.
In some cases, medication such as antidepressants may also be considered.
