Louvre Museum to Install 100 Exterior Cameras after Robbery Incident

Khaberni - Laurence des Cars, the director of the Louvre Museum in France, stated on Wednesday that the museum will install 100 external cameras by the end of 2026 as part of tightening security measures after the shocking theft that occurred last month.

Des Cars mentioned in a hearing at the National Assembly that relations with the Paris police would be strengthened by establishing a "sophisticated police station inside the Louvre complex."

The theft, which occurred in broad daylight on October 19 and involved four thieves stealing jewelry valued at over one hundred million dollars, questioned the museum's ability to protect its vast and important collections. The Louvre is the most visited museum in the world.

Investigators have charged four suspects involved in the robbery, but the stolen treasures have not yet been recovered.

Officials admitted the lack of adequate coverage by security surveillance cameras for the museum's external walls and the balcony used in the break-in.

Following the theft, French officials said that the Louvre Museum would impose additional security measures, including anti-ram devices and vehicle barriers on nearby roads by the end of the year.

A report published last month by the General Audit Office in France, known as the Court of Auditors, stated that excessive spending on artworks has exacerbated the museum's inability to update its infrastructure.

However, Des Cars told lawmakers, "I take full responsibility for these collections, which are the pride of our country and our artistic and historical collections. The work at the Louvre Museum should not be seen as conflicting with the enrichment of the national art collections."
