Libya discovers a new archaeological treasure in the ancient Roman city of Ptolemais

Khaberni - The Libyan Department of Antiquities has announced the discovery of a new archaeological treasure in the historic city of Ptolemais, which is over 28 centuries old and dates back to the 7th century BC.

The department confirmed that a team of researchers from the Tokra Antiquities Office, east of Benghazi, has uncovered an ancient road that links the cities of Al Marj and Tolmeitha, dating back to the Roman era.

The media office of the department indicated that the discovery of the ancient road passing through the south of the historical city, formerly known as Ptolemais, adds a new page to the rich archaeological record across various Libyan regions. Archaeology experts explained that this discovery will pave the way for further studies on the network of ancient Roman roads established in the region.

Ptolemais, now known as Tolmeitha, was established as a Greek city and was one of the five Libyan cities. It flourished in the Roman era, becoming the capital of the Cyrenaica region during Emperor Diocletian's reign, and served as an important commercial and cultural center in North Africa due to its coastal location. The city is currently listed on UNESCO's tentative list under the name "Tolmeitha Archaeological Site".

In related developments, the mission from the University of Palermo in Italy continues its work studying and restoring archaeological sites in the city of Sabratha. The mission's tasks include completing excavations and restorations of the Serapeum, the baptistery hall, and the Sea Villa, alongside documentation and recording works inside the storages and museums, in cooperation with researchers and experts from the Sabratha Antiquities Office.

This work is part of the efforts to support the preservation of the historical heritage of Sabratha, to ensure the protection of archaeological sites and maintain their historical value for future generations.
