Khaberni - Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition where some areas of the skin become darker than their surroundings due to excessive production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color.
Although genetic factors and sun exposure are the most common, some daily habits can worsen the problem, according to Dr. Kavita Mariwalla, a clinical cosmetologist at the Revive clinic.
Here are 7 habits that contribute to worsening hyperpigmentation:
1. Picking at spots and pimples
Trying to squeeze or peel pimples harms the surrounding skin and increases the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and marks may remain long after the pimples have healed. Doctors advise against handling them manually and recommend consulting a dermatologist to assess and safely treat the skin.
2. Ignoring sunscreen indoors
Exposure to ultraviolet rays occurs daily even near windows, which can worsen dark spots and slow the healing of the skin. It is advised to use a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen SPF50 in the morning and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
3. Using harsh exfoliants
Strong peeling or rough home exfoliants can create tiny tears in the skin, increase inflammation, and exacerbate pigmentation. It is preferable to use gentle chemical exfoliants like mandelic acid or lactic acid at a 5% concentration, or professional treatments at the clinic like microneedling to renew skin cells without damage.
4. Lack of hydration
Dry skin is more susceptible to pigmentation due to a weakened skin barrier that makes it easier for irritants to penetrate. Drinking adequate amounts of water and using moisturizers rich in ceramides and peptides helps prevent the appearance of dark spots, and sessions like HydraFacial to deeply exfoliate and moisturize the skin can also be an option.
5. Sleeping without proper cleaning
Leaving traces of makeup, sunscreen, and dirt on the skin overnight can clog pores and lead to the appearance of pimples, a major cause of hyperpigmentation.
6. Relying on home remedies
Recipes like baking soda, lemon juice, or coffee masks can cause tiny tears and chemical burns, making pigmentation deeper and harder to treat. It is better to consult a specialist and choose scientifically designed therapeutic products.
7. Stress and chronic stress
Increased cortisol levels due to stress slow the healing of the skin and increase inflammation, making dark spots more persistent. It is recommended to practice sports, breathing exercises, meditation, and get adequate sleep (7–8 hours daily) to support the health of the skin and body together.
Persisting with these daily healthy habits not only supports skin health but also promotes clearer, more consistent skin and reduces the exacerbation of hyperpigmentation.
