Khaberni - The Ministry of Health in Morocco stated in a Saturday statement that the number of people with diabetes in the kingdom has reached approximately 2.7 million, which is 10.6% of the adult population.
The Ministry of Health stated that 10.4% of Moroccans are in the pre-diabetes stage, half of them unaware of their condition, which delays medical care and increases the likelihood of health complications.
According to the ministry, health expenditures associated with diabetes in Morocco exceeded 1.5 billion dirhams in 2022, according to data from the National Health Insurance Agency, reflecting the size of the challenge posed by this disease to the national health system.
The report noted that diabetes currently affects 589 million people, which is about 10 percent of the adult population worldwide, and this number could reach 853 million people by 2050, according to the International Diabetes Federation.
Factors related to work (lack of movement, stress, and an unbalanced diet) contribute significantly to the increase in the number of people affected by this disease.
To address these challenges, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection is implementing an integrated program for the prevention, detection, and management of diabetes, in partnership with various institutional and associative actors.
The Ministry of Health launched a national program spanning from November 14 to December 15, 2025, which includes:
- Awareness campaigns about risk factors.
- Early detection in primary healthcare institutions.
- Sessions for the therapeutic education of patients.
- Awareness activities in workplaces in cooperation with companies.
- Mobilization of media to disseminate prevention messages and promote healthy living styles.
The ministry confirmed that these initiatives are part of its commitment to enhancing diabetes prevention and management, and contributing to achieving sustainable development goals related to health and well-being, in light of the growing challenges posed by this chronic disease to public health.
