Khaberni - At least 8 people were killed and 9 others injured early this Saturday in an armed tribal conflict that erupted among members of the same tribe following a dispute over agricultural land in Wasit Governorate, southeastern Iraq.

A police official told Agence France-Presse - preferring not to reveal his identity - that the confrontation broke out at five in the morning in the village of Khashan, located about 65 kilometers south of the city of Al Kut.

The security official explained that the parties used light and medium weapons during the clash.

He added that the security forces encircled the village in an attempt to contain the tension "but the dispute has not been resolved yet."

Baghdad witnessed a similar tribal conflict in September, which resulted in the deaths of 6 people, including 4 security personnel, over a disagreement between two tribes regarding an electric generator fee.

For decades, Iraq has seen wars, sectarian violence, and battles, including the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the control of the Islamic State organization over vast parts of the country between 2014 and 2017.

These conflicts have left hundreds of thousands dead, and over the years, light and heavy weapons have spread across the country, which today experiences relative stability, but still sees numerous tribal conflicts and political retributions, according to Agence France-Presse.
