Khaberni - OpenAI is conducting a preliminary test of a major feature in its chatbot "ChatGPT", which is group chat functionality, in some selected markets.

The company has started introducing the possibility of conducting group chats in "ChatGPT" for the first time.

This represents a significant change in how most chatbots have been used so far. Microsoft recently introduced this idea in its chatbot Copilot, according to a report by the tech news site "9to5Mac".

The group chat feature operates on the new "GPT-5.1" model that was released on Wednesday, and usage limits are only counted when "ChatGPT" responds.

This feature allows users within the group to conduct discussions without having to prompt "ChatGPT" to respond after each message and without reaching usage limits.

In this feature, "ChatGPT" monitors the flow of the conversation and decides when to respond and when to remain silent based on the context of the dialogue within the group.

Users can always mention "ChatGPT" in any message if they want the chatbot to reply.

"ChatGPT" can also interact with emojis on messages, as well as recognize profile pictures, enabling it to use images of group members when creating fun and personalized images within the group chat.

Currently, "OpenAI" is testing the group chat feature in "ChatGPT" only in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.

"OpenAI" said that it will enhance the group chat mechanism based on initial user feedback and that it will expand the feature to more regions over time.
