Yasar AlKhaytan presents the efforts of the Amman Municipality in combating tobacco

Khaberni - Greater Amman Municipality, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, held an introductory meeting on Thursday with university students participating in the "Wellness Ambassadors" program, at the Hussein Cultural Center, to present the Municipality's efforts in combating tobacco and enhancing youth participation in spreading health awareness in the community.

The meeting comes within the framework of ongoing cooperation between the two sides to promote public health and combat smoking, where 35 students from various Jordanian universities and diverse disciplines including medicine, pharmacy, nursing, health sciences, and public policies were trained.

Deputy City Manager for Health and Agriculture, Dr. Yasar Al-Khaytan, emphasized in his speech the importance of the youth role in building an aware and healthy community, noting that combating tobacco is not just an administrative action, but a national and ethical responsibility that requires the participation of the entire community.

The Directorate of Health and Professional Supervision reviewed the executive plan for smoking control derived from the national strategy, along with the results of the survey on the reality of smoking in Amman Municipality and the enhanced plan based on those results.

During the meeting, students of the "Wellness Ambassadors" program presented their most significant achievements and future proposals for participating in awareness campaigns, field activities, and applied research in cooperation with the Municipality's staff.

An initiative was proposed to organize a youth event similar to TED TALK at the Greater Amman Municipality Theater, with the participation of university students, influencers, doctors, and health activists, aiming to spread a culture of "life without smoking" in an interactive and innovative way.

At the end of the meeting, Greater Amman Municipality and the World Health Organization affirmed their continued joint cooperation in implementing awareness programs, and empowering youth to be leaders of change towards a healthy, smoke-free Amman, in line with the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
