Morocco Urgent Investigation After Marriage of a Child to an Elderly Man Causes Widespread Public Outrage

Khaberni - The Moroccan Public Prosecutor's Office announced an urgent investigation after news spread of a 14-year-old girl marrying an older man in one of the regions of the Kenitra Province, through what is known as "Fatih marriage," which sparked widespread public outcry and condemnation on social media.

Moroccan newspaper "Al-Sabah," in its issue dated Wednesday, November 12, 2025, stated that the incident is considered an evasion of the law under the guise of Fatih marriage, and represents a serious regression from the achievements gained in the protection of childhood and the opposition to the marriage of minors.

The "Engage against Gender Violence" network, affiliated with the Women's Rights Association, clarified that it had submitted two official complaints to the Attorney General at the Kenitra Court of Appeal, the head of the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the Attorney General at the Rabat Court of Cassation, requesting an investigation into the incident and describing it as a blatant assault on the child's rights, which the Public Prosecutor's Office has indeed begun to investigate.

The network confirmed that this type of practice exposes minor girls to early violence, deprives them of education and a dignified life, and urged the relevant authorities to take the necessary legal measures to prevent the completion of the unlawful marriage and protect the girl, enabling her to exercise her Constitutional and international rights.
