Khaberni - It seems that "WhatsApp," owned by Meta, is preparing to launch one of its most anticipated features, as it is working on a new system for reserving unique usernames, similar to what is available on social media platforms like "Instagram" and "Facebook."
The new beta version 2.25.32.3 of the "WhatsApp" app on Android includes an option that allows users to reserve the same username they use on "Instagram" or "Facebook," according to a report published by "digitaltrends" and reviewed by "Al Arabiya Business."
However, "WhatsApp" does not plan to launch the feature broadly at this time, as it will first allow a specific group of users and companies to reserve their preferred names in advance, before the full launch expected in 2026.
How will the new feature work? According to leaked details, users will be asked to enter the username registered with them on "Instagram" or "Facebook," then go through a verification process via the "Meta" accounts center.
Once the verification is completed, the username will be linked to the same "WhatsApp" account, making the user's identity more consistent across different "Meta" applications.
A unified digital identity across "Meta" applications The new feature will be particularly beneficial for creators, brand owners, and companies who strive to maintain a unified digital identity across various "Meta" platforms.
As for regular users using different names across their applications, they might have to wait until the full system launch at a later stage.
Further reports confirm that "WhatsApp" will begin by granting priority to business accounts to obtain unique usernames by June 2026, a step that will facilitate communication with companies and individuals without needing to share a phone number.
With this, "WhatsApp" follows in the footsteps of applications like "Telegram" and "Signal" that already rely on usernames as a primary means of communication.
This step reflects "Meta's" direction towards building a unified digital identity system, linking its different applications and making the user experience smoother and safer.
