Turmeric and Honey A Golden Mix for Weight Loss or Just a Health Illusion

Khaberni - Turmeric is considered a natural anti-inflammatory, and consuming it with a spoonful of honey may enhance antioxidant levels, reduce inflammations, and even help with weight loss.

Regarding this, Dr. Tracy Brigman, a nutrition specialist at the University of Georgia, says that following a diet focused on anti-inflammatory foods, including turmeric and honey, may help in weight loss.
Anti-inflammatory diet

Brigman explains: "An anti-inflammatory diet includes foods rich in fibers, nutrients, and phytochemicals."

This diet is a comprehensive healthy dietary regimen which might lead to weight loss if chosen instead of the traditional Western diet, typically focused more on processed meats, refined sugars, saturated fats, and less on fiber and nutrients.

However, adding turmeric and honey to a diet rich in inflammation-causing foods might not significantly aid in weight loss.

Julia Zumpano, a dietitian at Cleveland Clinic, says, "Chronic inflammation affects the entire body; multiple continuous steps must be taken to reduce inflammation."

According to "Free Will Health", chronic inflammation might increase insulin resistance, and inflammatory chemicals can stimulate appetite and fat storage, as well as potentially slow down the fat-burning process.

Zumpano advises relying on multiple measures to lose weight.

"You can lose weight by consistently eating a variety of anti-inflammatory foods, getting enough sleep, and maintaining an active lifestyle."
Other health benefits

Turmeric derives its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties from a natural compound, or polyphenol, called curcumin. Brigman says: "It is also rich in phytochemicals which might have protective health benefits against cancer and heart diseases."

Honey primarily consists of sugar along with amino acids, minerals, and vitamins that provide it with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Brigman states: "Research on honey shows that antioxidants may help reduce the risk of heart disease, alleviate digestive issues, and offer anti-depressive and anti-anxiety benefits."

However, regarding turmeric and honey, excessive consumption does not necessarily mean greater health benefits. Turmeric contains high levels of lead, and excessive consumption may interfere with certain blood-thinning medications and increase the risk of kidney stones.
