Khaberni - Nour Al-Din Al-Baba, the spokesperson for the Syrian Ministry of Interior, confirmed that the ministry is exerting its utmost efforts to provide the best possible security service for Syrians, despite the major challenges.
Regarding security cooperation with other countries, Al-Baba revealed in an interview with the Russian "Rianovosti" on Saturday, that there are security agreements with several Arab and regional countries, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, and Turkey, with an indication of soon launching security coordination with Lebanon.
He also clarified that these agreements include training, joint operations, and information exchange.
Furthermore, he pointed out the possibility of Russia playing an important role in supporting and developing the security and police sector in Syria, through entering into joint security agreements when facing mutual security threats, along with enhancing cooperation and exchanging expertise to serve the national interest.
Security issues
Regarding the file of security suspects under the previous regime, the spokesperson clarified that the circulated figures are exaggerated, and the actual number is estimated to be in the tens or hundreds of thousands, not in the millions as rumored.
He also mentioned that the ministry is working on categorizing the wanted individuals based on their level of involvement, where those involved in murder or terrorism are handed over to the competent judiciary, while those not involved in bloody crimes are given a chance for reintegration into society.
Sectarian discrimination
In relation to accusations directed at some security apparatuses for committing violations against certain sects, especially in the Syrian coast and predominantly Christian areas, he stressed the need to distinguish between individual errors and "sectarian practices," asserting that the latter are completely rejected and contradict the state policy and the principles of the revolution that was based on justice, freedom, and dignity.
Solutions to the problem of official documents
As for the issue of official documents that millions of Syrians are struggling with, Al-Baba assured that the ministry has issued since the beginning of the liberation more than a million passports, in addition to millions of other official documents.
He also added that the ministry is working on a full digital transformation in the coming months, aiming to speed up procedures and improve service quality, noting that the issuance of IDs and official documents is linked to the process of updating the state’s visual identity and conducting a comprehensive census of the population to ensure the accuracy of national data.
