Study Refutes Common Belief About Using Phones Before Sleep

Khaberni - A study conducted by Metropolitan Toronto University and Laval University in Canada showed that using phones during the night and before sleeping does not negatively affect sleep quality as many believe. The research included more than a thousand adults who were asked to answer questions about their use of electronic devices before sleep and its relation to sleep quality.

It was found that the overall sleep quality was similar between those who use screens every night and those who never use them. The study, published in the journal “Sleep Health,” also mentioned that adults who use devices before sleep nearly daily recorded better sleep timing and higher alertness during the day, while those who use screens less than once a week recorded the highest sleep regularity and satisfaction.

Colleen Carney from Metropolitan Toronto University explained that previous studies about blue light did not consider factors such as age, timing, and exposure intensity, which may determine the effect of light on sleep. She noted that there are reasons to be cautious about excessive exposure to blue light during the evening in adolescents because their sensitivity to light is higher, but with aging, sensitivity decreases and changes in the eye limit the impact of the light on sleep.

Carney advised users to monitor the relationship between using phones and their sleep quality. If you notice that sleep improves when stopping the use of devices early, then let that become a new habit. If no difference is noticed, devices may not be the problem as some might think.

Previous studies also indicate that using electronic devices before sleep affects sleep quality and duration, as well as memory and concentration.
