Khaberni - American media reported the victory of Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani as Mayor of New York, as well as the victory of two Democratic candidates for governor in Virginia and New Jersey.
The Republican losses in the elections held last Tuesday in New York, Virginia and New Jersey represent a significant test for President Donald Trump and his party as the midterm Congressional elections approach next year, and also test the Democratic party's ability to overcome internal divisions at the same time.
According to voter polls after the closing of ballot boxes, Mamdani (34 years old), the Democratic candidate, led the race, surpassing Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and former New York Governor and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.
Thus, Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, will be the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States starting January 1st next year.
Preliminary estimates show that the Democratic candidate for Mayor of New York received 50.4% of the votes compared to 41.3 for his Republican opponent, leading by a margin of more than 100,000 votes.
Mamdani has always been targeted due to his stances on Israeli government policies and the war in Gaza, but he has not backed down from them.
Bloomberg reported that the New York City mayoral elections saw the highest turnout in decades.
