Khaberni - The World Bank confirmed that the program to enhance electric sector efficiency and supply reliability in Jordan has made clear progress in its implementation towards the sustainability of the sector and the improvement in operational efficiency and enhancing energy supply security.
According to an evaluative report of the project, $296 million of the total funding of $500 million have been spent on the project, representing 53.8%, with "satisfactory" implementation evaluations for the program, which commenced in August 2023.
In terms of financial efficiency, the National Electricity Company achieved savings and additional revenues amounting to 107 million Jordanian dinars up to mid-2025, as part of efforts to reduce expenses and increase operational revenues, and a new tariff was adopted that contributes to improving revenues and reducing electrical losses.
In the field of renewable energy and electric supply, the Kingdom has maintained a generation rate exceeding 26% of the total generation from renewable energy sources, with an estimated 2,072 gigawatt-hour of solar and wind energy pumped until mid-year.
The rate of power outages has decreased to 0.23 outages per subscriber by the end of last September compared to 0.34 in 2022, which reflects progress in improving service reliability and network sustainability.
The program is operating within a governmental framework extending until 2030 targeting the efficiency enhancement of the sector and the improvement of governance and financial risk management, with measures including support for the structural integrity of the National Electricity Company, the development of internal control systems and auditing, the implementation of IFRS international accounting standards, as well as improving debt management and converting part of the company's obligations into equity rights.
The program also includes training young engineers in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency, with an increase in the female participation rate to exceed 25 out of 40 trainees, in addition to the commencement of energy efficiency audits in government buildings according to the approved schedule.
