Khaberni - The British Secretary of State for Foreign and Development Affairs, Yvette Cooper, visits Jordan on Monday to discuss the efforts made by the United Kingdom alongside Jordan to support the ceasefire in Gaza, to aid the people of the sector, and to boost regional stability.
It is scheduled for the Secretary to visit a depot for ready British aid awaiting permission to enter Gaza. She will also call for an increase in the volume of aid sent; considering it a vital step towards a real path to peace, noting that Jordan is a key hub for coordinating and delivering aid, and that the UK is working to intensify humanitarian efforts across the Middle East.
Cooper called for the opening of all crossings leading to Gaza, lifting more restrictions on aid entry, and allowing the United Nations and non-governmental organizations to increase their life-saving efforts as part of the US-led peace plan.
In response to these urgent needs, the Foreign Secretary will announce a new contribution of £6 million from the UK through the United Nations to provide life-saving sexual and reproductive health services for women in crisis areas around the world, including Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine.
This funding includes support for mobile teams to provide healthcare and midwifery in Gaza.
This comes after announcing a provision of £4 million this week to support the United Nations Department of Mine and Unexploded Ordnance Action in Gaza, ensuring safe aid distribution.
The Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said: "The necessary British aid, including food supplies and shelter supplies, is ready in the warehouses and waiting for entry. There is a desperate need for humanitarian support, and the people of Gaza cannot wait."
She added, "Following the US-led peace process, and plans for a significant increase in aid to Gaza, we need an increase in the number of crossings, the acceleration of the lifting of restrictions, and we need more agencies to be able to enter with aid."
Cooper continued, "Alongside food aid, we need a rapid increase in shelter supplies and medical care. This includes urgent support for pregnant mothers. We have no time to waste in providing aid and making meaningful progress towards sustainable peace."
During her visit to Jordan, the Minister will meet with students at a school funded by the United Kingdom and supported by UNRWA. She will also visit a hospital that has treated children who have arrived in the United Kingdom for medical treatment, and she will review ongoing efforts to provide medical assessment and vaccination for children and families coming from Gaza.
