Khaberni - The Greater Jerash Municipality has allocated a piece of land as a shelter for stray dogs, after collecting them from various areas of the municipality, in an effort to curb their spread and address complaints from citizens, according to the municipality's executive director Ali Shouqah.
Shouqah stated that the municipality has allocated an area of about one dunum, and equipped it to be a designated site for housing and sterilizing stray dogs, explaining that the municipality has formed four field teams working on collecting the dogs from various areas.
He added that a veterinarian oversees the sterilization and care process at the site, noting that the municipal teams have so far managed to collect more than 400 dogs.
Shouqah mentioned that the number of stray dogs has seen a noticeable increase recently within the areas under the municipality’s jurisdiction, necessitating intensified field efforts, especially after recording numerous complaints from the citizens through designated reporting numbers.
Shouqah explained that a meeting was recently held at the Jerash Governorate building, attended by the Governor of Jerash, Malik Khreisat, which was dedicated to discussing mechanisms for dealing with stray dogs and assigning a permanent site for their sterilization and shelter.
