Khaberni - A mayor in the state of Michoacan, western Mexico, who had urged the government to put forth greater efforts to combat drug cartels, was killed.
The federal and state authorities confirmed the killing of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, by gunshot during an event in the city center, according to the national newspaper El Economista.
The newspaper reported, citing the Mexican Security Council, that two people were arrested in connection to the attack, while one of the attackers was killed during the incident.
Manzo had repeatedly asked President Claudia Sheinbaum to intensify efforts to confront the drug cartels known in the country and requested more protection from the federal government, according to Bloomberg News Agency.
Reports also noted that Manzo was attending a candlelighting ceremony in the city, which has a population of about 360,000, when he was shot in front of a church around 8 PM on Saturday, and he later died in the hospital from his injuries.
