Knesset Discusses Law for Executing Palestinian Prisoners

Khaberni - Channel 14 Israeli announced on Thursday that a bill for executing Palestinian prisoners will be put up for discussion next Monday in the Knesset General Assembly.

Journalistic and Israeli sources confirmed that the Knesset will start discussing a bill on Monday aimed at imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, in preparation for the final vote on it within the same week.

This step came after pressure from the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who threatened not to support the governing coalition's legislation unless the bill is pushed forward.

The proposed law stipulates the execution of any Palestinian prisoner proven to be involved in operations that resulted in the deaths of Israelis, especially in what Israel calls "ideological or racial motives".

This law is proposed as part of the coalition agreement between the ruling Likud party and "Otzma Yehudit" led by Ben-Gvir, especially amid the military escalation and the tough Israeli stance following the release of all living Israeli prisoners from Gaza.

The law has faced broad human rights condemnations as a violation of international laws and an "unprecedented brutality", while the Israeli government considers it a new pressure tool on Hamas and Palestinian factions, whereas the move has also caused concern among families of Israeli prisoners who see the legislation as an escalation that will increase tensions.

This discussion and vote on it are expected to elicit broad Palestinian, Arab, and international reactions in the coming days due to the seriousness of the law and its implications on the humanitarian and political situation in the Palestinian territories.
