Khaberni - A recent study at Pennsylvania State University showed that meals containing a moderate amount of chili pepper led participants to eat between 11% and 18% less food without affecting their enjoyment.
The moderate level of spiciness helps with eating
This means that the capsaicin found in chili pepper (hot sauce) enhances metabolism and reduces inflammation, but it is unlikely to cause long-term weight loss.
According to "Free Will Health", while spicy foods may cause sweating, they may also help you eat slowly and avoid overeating, according to a new study.
Damage from eating too quickly
Eating too fast is associated with obesity, high blood pressure, and high triglyceride levels.
Those suffering from esophageal reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, or celiac disease may need to avoid spicy foods despite their potential health benefits.
Moderately spicy meals
To study how spices affect eating behavior, the researchers offered participants spicy beef and chicken tikka masala seasoned with varying amounts of sweet and hot paprika.
When the meals were moderately hot, the participants ate more slowly and consumed between 11% to 18% less food.
Dr. Big Cunningham, the lead author of the study at Pennsylvania State University, said: "All we changed was the amount of hot paprika we added to the meals to make them moderately hot, and this slight change was enough to significantly reduce energy consumption."
Is there an effect of water?
All meals included water, but participants drank comparable amounts regardless of the spice level.
This suggests that their decreased consumption was not due to drinking more water.
Participants also reported enjoying the spicy meals just as much as the mild ones.
Cunningham said: "Adding chili pepper to the meal - in an amount sufficient to make it spicy without changing its temperature - may help reduce the amount you eat."
