Khaberni - The Spanish club Real Madrid has announced that it will begin actions to request compensation from the European Football Union (UEFA) after a new court ruling in the European Super League case.
The royal club was one of 12 European clubs that supported the launch of a tournament under the name of the European Super League in 2021, but the idea collapsed after strong public and governmental pressure.
UEFA also opposed the launch of the tournament, but the European Court of Justice stated in December 2023 that the continental union and the International Federation of Football (FIFA) violated European Union laws by doing so.
Real Madrid said on Wednesday that the regional court in the Spanish capital, Madrid, rejected appeals filed by UEFA, the Spanish Football Federation, and the Spanish League Association in the case of the European Super League.
This came after a Spanish judge last year ordered FIFA and UEFA to stop their opposition to the tournament, ruling that they were engaging in anti-competitive behavior and were exploiting their dominant position.
Real Madrid stated in a statement: "Real Madrid welcomes the decision of the Regional Court in Madrid to reject the appeals filed by UEFA, the Spanish Federation, and the Spanish League Association, confirming that UEFA committed, in the case of the Super League, a significant violation of the competition rules of the European Union, abusively exploiting its dominant position, which aligns with the ruling of the European Court of Justice."
The statement added, "The club also clarifies that it conducted intense discussions with senior UEFA officials during 2025 to find ways to achieve the necessary reforms, but no agreement was reached on more transparent governance, financial sustainability, player health protection, and enhancing fan experience, including globally available free viewing options like those used in the FIFA Club World Cup."
Real Madrid continued in its statement: "Based on this, the club announces that it will continue to work for the benefit of global football and its fans, while demanding UEFA for compensation for the substantial damages incurred."
