A recent study has revealed that sleeping in complete darkness is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
Khaberni - The study, conducted by Flinders University in Australia and published in the "JAMA Network Open" journal, states that exposure to light while sleeping affects sleep quality and increases the likelihood of heart failure, strokes, and coronary artery disease.
The results showed that individuals who slept with **overhead lights on** had a 56% higher likelihood of heart failure, a 32% higher risk of coronary artery disease, and a 28% higher risk of stroke. Additionally, the chances of suffering a heart attack increased by 47%, and atrial fibrillation by 32% among those exposed to high levels of light.
The researchers used wearable devices on the wrist to measure light intensity during sleep between midnight and six in the morning, to establish the relationship between nighttime lighting and heart health.
